BPAs and your Health

We should all know about BPA by now as most of us have changed our baby bottles, Nalgene Bottles and maybe even have changed from canned goods to frozen (because of the plastic lining in cans).

Little do we know that we are marinating in BPA all of the time. How? It is in CDs, DVDs, kitchen appliances and utensils, medical supplies, the face of laptops and Blackberry, etc. Especially, BPA is found on carbonless paper, like the receipts from the store we touch all the time. After touching a receipt, those BPA’s go right from our finger tips into our blood stream.

BPA disrupts our hormones and we have known this since the 1930’s!!! BPAs effects are different at low levels and high levels - this means there ISN’T A SAFE LEVEL.

BPA is linked to increases in prostate and breast cancer, uro-genital abnormalities, decline in semen quality in men, early onset puberty in girls, etc.

Canada has lead the world to take action to limit BPA. Yaye us! Think twice about what you purchase, what you keep and perhaps alternatives.

In our family we are changing our plastic toys to wood, our rubbermaid/tupperware to glass and even changing our drip coffee maker (which is largely plastic) to an all glass Bodum-style French press. A few problems solved.

Heidi Widmer is our sponsored athlete. Let’s meet her!
Heidi was born and raised in Banff as the youngest of four children. Whenever possible, her Swiss father and Canadian mother had the family outdoors in the Canadian Rockies, hiking, downhill skiing, camping and cross-country skiing.
Heidi started skiing at a young age and started competing in cross-country at a regional race when she was 9 years old. Since then, she has graduated with honours from Banff Community High School in 2008 while competing with Foothills Nordic Ski Club. She has been a member of the Alberta World Cup Academy since 2008 and in the spring of 2010 moved to Canmore to continue the pursuit of National and International success.
Heidi has been a member of the Canadian Junior Team for the past three years and has represented Canada at four World Junior Championships as well as four World Cups, to date. Heidi has 17 National Championship medals and for the current 2010/11 season and her goal is to post a top 12 result in the sprint event at the World Junior Championships in Otepaa, Estonia.
When she’s not training Heidi loves hiking, downhill skiing, camping and just enjoying the Rockies with family and friends! And of course, taking a few courses through correspondence from Athabasca University in pursuit of a degree!
Whew!
Keep up to date with Heidi’s accomplishments on her blog http://heidiwidmer.blogspot.com

2010 Calgary Women’s Run

For the fourth consecutive year, Dr. Angela headed up a team to provide post-race treatment to the ladies of the Calgary Women’s Run. Although this year’s weather rained us out, we were able to support the race through sponsorship and draw prizes. Our contribution helped to raise $6000 for the YMCA School Support Program. Congratulations to Jenny, the race director, for a supreme job. And of course, to all of you who participated. See you all next year!

2010 Strathmore Women’s Triathlon

Cadence Sports Therapy was a proud sponsor of the 2010 Strathmore Women’s Triathlon on August 15, 2010. With some help from CCMH-Foothills School of Massage Therapy, we were able to provide pre- and post-race treatment to the participants of the triathlon. We were able to raise over $250 and all proceeds went to Fast & Female (www.fastandfemale.com) a fabulous organization that empowers females, aged 9-19, through sport.

Congratulations to all of the participants!
